The tribe that owns the newly opened Thunder Valley Casino has contributed $50,000 to the California Council on Problem Gambling to help fund research, education, prevention and treatment for compulsive and problem gamblers.

Ninety percent of the contribution, to be given annually by the United Auburn Indian Community, will be directed to address issues of problem gambling in Placer County. The 200,000-square-foot casino, which opened in June, is located in the county, in the town of Lincoln.

"Our tribe is committed to working closely with the council to educate casino employees to watch for signals of problem gambling," said Jessica Tavares, chairperson of the tribe and the casino's business board. "The abuse of gambling is an activity that the tribe does not want to promote at our facility as it hurts the entire community."
