We all talk a good game whenever honoring our troops is the subject of
conversation, but actually rousing oneself from the rigors of a
three-day weekend is another matter.
What with too many of our brave young warriors being killed and wounded
to bring democracy to the rest of the world, maybe the May 30
dedication of the Auburn Area War Memorial is the right time to leave
the patio and pool.
The dedication begins at 9 in the morning at the New Auburn Cemetery,
and you'll be back home in time to fire up the barbecue for lunch,
something a lot of our troops would no doubt prefer to do that
day.
There'll be a piper, bugler, and various veterans groups on hand to
dedicate the memorial, which honors the supreme sacrifice made by
Auburn area troops from World War I and II, Korea, Vietnam and
Iraq.
A lot of people put this together, but top kudos belong to councilman
Mike Holmes of the Placer Navy League, Dan Sokol of the local VFW, and
Terry Crouson of the American Legion.
Additional thanks go to those who helped raise the $30,000 needed to
make the memorial a reality, including both the Auburn and Gold Country
Rotary clubs, the Auburn Aviation Association, and a challenge grant
from the United Auburn Indian Community.
