UNITED AUBURN INDIAN COMMUNITY TO DONATE $1,000,000 TO FIGHT HATE CRIMES

WHAT: The United Auburn Indian Community will present a check in the amount of $1,000,000 to the Capital Unity Council on Wednesday, June 21, at 10:30 a.m. at the site of the Capital Unity Council's future center on 16th and N Streets in downtown Sacramento.

The Capital Unity Council is a catalyst for learning how the strength of diversity can unite all of us to value one another as people first. They focus to create transformational experiences that reveal prejudice, discrimination and stereotypes through a series of thought provoking group and individual activities. Visitors are motivated to take responsibility for their actions and make everyday choices that unite all people. The Center will use UAIC's donation help finance the construction of a new building where it will hold programs to help foster cultural acceptance and awareness.

"Members of the United Auburn Indian Community have experienced firsthand the kind of cultural intolerance that the Capital Unity Council tries so hard to extinguish," said Jessica Tavares, Tribal Chairwoman of UAIC. "Our Tribe believes each culture is important and should be shared and appreciated by others. We are proud to help the Capital Unity Center in the construction of a new facility."

"We are overwhelmed that the United Auburn Indian Community has chosen to support the planned Capital Unity Center with such a generous gift," said Capital Unity Council Board President Darrell Steinberg. "Their generosity sends a clear message to our community about the importance of this project. We are especially honored to have their participation as an active partner in the development of this unique Center."
