Programs | Environmental Protection

United Auburn Indian Community has established an Environmental Protection Office to address tribal environmental issues.

Shelley McGinnis serves as the UAIC Environmental Coordinator and has been working with the Tribe for over two years. She is assisted by tribal member Tracey Hu. Environmental protection staff members have been working with tribal residents at the historic Auburn Rancheria to identify what type of items they would like to have removed from their properties. Since the environmental protection program began in 2002, over fifty abandoned/non-operative vehicles have been removed from the Rancheria.

During 2004 and 2005, environmental protection staff sponsored four community cleanup days at the Rancheria. The 2004 cleanup took place on April 12th and 13th and focused on the removal of a large pile of metal cans and glass from one of the parcels owned by the Tribe. The 2005 cleanup took place on June 23rd and 24th. A small work crew was hired to remove debris from parcels owned by the Tribe and along Indian Rancheria Road. The work crew also assisted several tribal members with debris removal from their individual properties. Three large dumpsters were delivered to the Rancheria and filled with scrap metal, cardboard, wood, plastic, etc. Placer Hauling was hired to remove some large debris piles and haul away items that were not allowed in the dumpsters, such as appliances, tires, and car batteries.

Questions and comments regarding UAIC’s environmental protection program are welcome. For more information, please contact Shelley McGinnis at the UAIC Tribal Office (530-883-2320) during regular business hours.
